Is it easy to teach yourself the violin?

I was wondering how difficult it was to teach yourself the violin. Based on my research it is suggested that you get a private tutor. I have some music already in my background. I played the clarinet for numerous years and play a little piano. I would like to take up another instrument I could teach myself-where I can just imitate what’s in the book. Could I do this with a violin? If not, any other instrument suggestions?
What are the basic things I will need to start off playing violin? What is the best type of violin to get? Are the different colored ones any good?

It could be very tricky without a teacher, or at least a friend to give you a few pointers. With some music background, it might make it a bit easier, since you won’t have to be learning to read music at the same time. But playing woodwind and string instruments is quite a jump, it might be hard to learn it on your own. There’s specific hand positions, how to hold the instrument, how to bow correctly, how to have good intonation, and the list goes on. At the very least, I suggest finding a few how-to sites, and a few good intro books. Once you do get the hang of playing though, the violin is very fun. I’ve tried a few different instruments, and violin is definitely my favorite. Just stick with it!
