Violin Practice Mute- Rubber or Metal?

I just started college and would like to practice the violin in my dorm room (the music building is really far away, my dorm is on one side, building on the other). So, obviously I would need a practice mute. I know there are rubber and metal ones and the metal one is better sound wise but you can damage the violin.

So, question. What do you guys prefer?

Thanks!

I use a wooden clothespin attached to the bridge. With a tiny piece of flannel glued to the grip it won’t damage your bridge, it’s easily available, and works great. Most of the people I worked with in Europe used them and it was quite common to see a clothespin in their cases.
