Teaching Yourself Violin? Help Please?
I want to learn the violin and I can’t take lessons right now.
I have about 8 years of piano experience and 1 and a half of guitar.
Is it possible to develop proper technique and intonation from books and videos and instruction online? If I’m very discipline to hold the violin and bow the correct way and such?
Any suggestions or pointers?
i have been playing violin for 7 years. It is definitely harder to pick it up when you are older, but it is plausible. What you want to do is to pick one set of instruction and stick to it. There are many different ways to play the violin, so if you find lessons on different websites, it might throw you off with different sets of teachings. The first thing that I would do is to rent a violin. At first, it may sound pretty bad compared to your other instruments, but if you don’t give up, after a year or two of playing, you can switch to buying your own instrument which is totally worth it. After I bought my violin, I saw a great improvement in my sound and intonation, but you have to learn the basics first. I would start by learning the scales, and buying beginners books. Slowly, and gradually depending on how much effort you want to put in, you will get it. It is good that you started out with other instruments. Violin is very similar to the guitar with placing your fingers down on the frets. Good luck!!!!!
