What is hygrometers and humidifiers for violin cases?
I'm doing a project on the orchestra violin cases and additions to the normal cases include hygrometers and humidifiers. Does anyone have any information or history on both instruments? How do they work?
A humidifier is not a suitable device for a violin case. See reference to "Dampit" below. A hygrometer is a device for measuring the relative humidity in the air. This is an important article in order to hold a violin case because the instrument will tend to crack when humidity is low. Inexpensive hygrometers can be purchased at a cigar shop or a music shop, or as part of a home weather station. They can be done in different ways: Mechanical – A hair changes length with humidity. In your great aunt old weather station in the living room, there is probably a single blonde horsehair. It is quite wrong. Chemical – Cobalt chloride is used in the paperboard moisture indicators such as the strip comes with "Dampit" product. The color change with humidity. These are even more vague than the "hair" hygrometers. Here is a link to Dampit: http://www.dampits.com/ Electronic – There are integrated circuits based on voltage changes in certain materials, such as these: http://content.honeywell.com/sensing/prodinfo/humiditymoisture / That's my advice not to buy a hygrometer as part of a case. When (not if) the glue is dissolved out of the case lining, it will rattle around with violin and possibly scratch it. A hygrometer for cigar humidors can be purchased for under $ 20 and kept in the pocket of the case. Make sure you have a calibration screw on the device and calibrate it with a known electronic model.
