how much does the quality of a violin affect its sound?
I've been playing for about 5 years now. I'm still using one of my teacher, old violins peak the bridge is uneven and the strings are all twisted to the left so that the G-string is starting to come out. I have a friend whose violin cost about $ 5,000 in Peabody. so I have a classmate whose violin was very expensive, but his posture is sloppy and he does not even need a shoulder pad, and his playing sounds very good. I know I'm not the best player and I know that I can compare to the really good violinists, but I've noticed that not only is their technique and sound good, their violins are very high quality. I practiced and practiced, but I still cannot quite reach the sound I want, so I wonder how much of the quality of a violin affects the quality of their sound. it is my violin or my skill or is it something else? thanks.
The quality affects the sound a lot, but it makes the condition it is in. If you use Violin now is in poor repair, there's going to make a negative difference in the sound. If the strings are old and going bad, which will also affect the sound. Not using of a shoulder pad does not make a violin sound worse in fact many top players play without one because they feel that the sound is more open without a shoulder rest.
