Is the fiddle an easy instrument to learn to play? ?
No it isn’t.
You’ll need a good ear to be able to play accurately in tune since there are no frets to show you where to place your fingers on the fingerboard, and if you’re off by even a fraction of an inch, you’ll be out of tune.
Then the bowing is tricky. In a sense, if you’re playing dance music, the fiddle is like 2 instruments in one — your left hand on the fingerboard is playing the melody, while the bow in your right hand is like a percussion instrument, because you’re using it to play rhythmic patterns that add rhythmic drive and danceable groove to the music AND at the same time, expressing the emotional content of the tune.
Even if you already play another instrument like a guitar, the fiddle is a whole ‘nother animal. Expect it to take several years of practice before you’re proficient enough to sit in on most jam sessions.
