For you music teachers…..violin question.?
My 10 year old has decided he wants to try violin. We just got information from his teacher and it included a list of recommended makers and local stores. We purchased a used Scherl & Roth violin for him from one of those stores. (it was on the list & sounded German) My Husband and I have absolutely NO clue whatsoever. We were comparing it to a Knilling (sp?) with the saleman and assured they were of similar quality for a student violin. However, now that we’ve gotten home and figured out how to read the markings on the violin we see it was “made in china”, which we were told is an absolute no! Help! Are there some violin makers for whom the made in china is irrelevant? Or do we need to take this one back before our return option is gone?
China makes some great instruments now. 10 years ago it was a lot different. I own a 7 string hand carved arch-top guitar that was made in China. It sounds better than some hand made guitars that were made in USA that sell for 8-12k that I have played. My Chinese made one cost a fraction of that. Incidentally the company that made my guitar is known for making violins, violas, cellos and basses. In China they simply can make a better instrument for the money, unfortunately.
