How do you teach a child to hold a violin bow properly?
I can learn a lot of technique, I just want to teach my kids how to bend properly and move it over the string. I'm not real sure how to teach it since I learned when I was young. Let me know which school you are from (Suzuki, Russian, French, German …?)
I had a private teacher for 13 years who taught me music theory and proper placement of my fingers and such … with bow hand you can actually fake it a bit if you do not have the right hand positioning, I was always told to have the pinky at the end of the arch my middle and ring fingers should cover the white dot on the page of the bow and my finger was out in the bow thumb was bent underneath the frog of the bow … one thing you want to be sure is that their finger hand is correct by hand is far more likely to get carpal tunnel if they dont keep it true I think I'll take some pictures for you to show you what I think because it just easier … it is the image of the bow hand http://www.geocities.com/zipohda/bowhand.JPG the pinky is important because when you get the most leverage for sticato and spicato .. this image is the correct way to hold the violin when playing http://www.geocities.com/zipohda/goodwrist.JPG this is important because it can be very painful if you dont keep it properly the most common way to hold the violin wrong, is shown in this image http://www.geocities.com/zipohda/badwrist.JPG the limits of resolution you can do with the wrist and may cause damage to break your hand especially with years of using it this way at all cudos to you for teaching your kids how to play
