What’s the trick to achieving notes on extended positions while playing the viola/violin?

I’m playing “Viva La Vida” by Cold play for the Viola which requires an A in fourth position on the A string. Could someone please explain a technique, trick, or offer a tip as to how to reach fourth position correctly?

Firstly, you need to make sure that your holding the violin soley with your chin.

Now when are starting to learn to shift to fourth position you should put white tapes on a note that you can remember by memory (one that rings i.e.GDAE – simply because these are easier for most people to remember)

Now shifting requires a GREAT deal of proper technique. If you’ve never shifted past second position I reccomend you ask you teacher to show you, I’ll explain how to do it but you really should have someone show you.

When shifting into fourth position to play a note on the G string your palm (in relation to your hand) should (while shifting upward under the scroll with your thumb) move into a 90 degree position from its flat 180 position.

Simply put just rotate your hand towards you when going into the higher positions. Just remember your thumb should be at a different angle then it was when it was in first position. (and again this is just so your fingers are able to reach the notes.

Hope this helped!
