If you’re starting, definitely rent to begin with. Your local string shop should have plenty of options for rental.
It doesn’t matter what the model is, but rather how the instrument sounds and feels. Generally, more expensive instruments have a better sound, within a range. So a $1500 violin will most likely sound better than a $500 one, but it might be equal to or even superior to a $1700 or $2000 instrument, depending on where you’re getting it. When I last shopped for a bow, the $500 bow sounded and felt superior to the $700 one I tried, so guess which one I got?
It’s tough to choose an instrument online. You’re best off visiting a flesh-and-blood (brick-and-wood?) store and trying out their instruments, and you’re better off renting to start than purchasing…especially because as your skill increases, you’ll want a better instrument, and you don’t want to waste any money on low-end violins now.
If the back is one piece, the violin probably has better sound than a two piece, and if the back has tiger stripes (true ones; you can tell because they change, like a hologram, when you tilt the instrument), it’s probably made of higher-quality wood.
