How hard do you think it would be to take up the cello already being a violinist?
I’d really love to learn the cello and I feel like I could teach myself. I know posture, bow and vibrato techniques (Yes, I know they are different from violin techniques) and I learned the bass cleft in music theory. I know which notes the strings are, and which fingers make which notes, just not off the top of my head. So by the end of January I will have enough money to go to Baroque and rent a cello and I’m seriously considering doing it. Do you think I’m getting in over my head? I’ve also heard negative reviews about learning cello and violin, that it could permanently alter my violin skills.
Many string players play all 4 string instruments. I don’t like to change during a performance, but have done it.
You seem convinced you can do it, and that is half the battle.
Don’t rush it.
Get some beginner method books and follow them carefully. Make sure you learn each line well before going on. Position work may be a bit confusing. Not for everyone.
Be sure and use a book or instructor for position work.
Good Luck
